Care info for your BTD products:

Stainless Steel Jewellery

Stainless Steel jewellery is durable, rust-resistant and hypoallergenic. We use 304 stainless steel. This material is generally safe for those with allergies to metals, however it does contain low levels of non-leeching nickel so those with severe allergies may still experience a reaction. Thicker stainless steel pieces are very strong but to ensure longevity, please avoid putting under extreme conditions. Stainless steel pieces can be worn in water but contact with chemicals should be avoided. Polish with a soft cloth to regain shine. Jewellery with chains i.e. HADES collar pins or NORTH necklaces) are prone to tangling if not handled with care. You can use the BTD cards the items arrive on to keep them tidy while not wearing. The materials used in each piece of jewellery is noted on the item listing if you are unsure of which care information to follow.

18k Gold/Sterling Silver/Rhodium Plated Jewellery

Precious metals should be gently polished every few months to keep its shine. If your product is plated over brass, please avoid scratching or denting the jewellery as this can erode the plating. Precious metals are splash-proof but prolonged contact or submersion should be avoided. Please do not put this jewellery under stress or tension as this may damage or break the jewellery. Avoid contact with oils and perfumes. The materials used in each piece of jewellery is noted on the item listing if you are unsure of which care information to follow.

Metal Alloy Jewellery

Some elements of our jewellery are made of metal alloys, i.e. the moon pendants in our CRESCENT set and the bat in our DESMODA necklace. These items of jewellery should be stored in a dry place while not wearing and contact with water/oils should be avoided. The piece may dull over time if exposed to too much moisture. The materials used in each piece of jewellery is noted on the item listing if you are unsure of which care information to follow.

Polymer Clay Jewellery

Polymer clay is very durable and will last for a long time if cared for properly. The earring studs are affixed with liquid clay or resin, which bond to the base for an extra strong hold. Studs, hooks and hoops are made from 304 Stainless Steel unless noted otherwise. 304 Stainless Steel is generally safe for those with allergies to metals, however it does contain low levels of non-leeching nickel so those with severe allergies may still experience a reaction.

Polymer clay is flexible but shouldn’t be intentionally stressed. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold or hot environments as this can make our accessories too brittle or too malleable (respectively). Avoid contact with perfumes, oils, alcohols and acetone and avoid touching the clay too much with sweaty hands as this may damage the product. It’s particularly important to follow these guidelines if your Bad Times accessories have a printed surface, e.g. CRYPT studs. If your product is damaged through negligence (i.e. not following the above guidelines) we cannot be held responsible. The materials used in each piece of jewellery is noted on the item listing if you are unsure of which care information to follow.

Brass Jewellery Elements

We don't like to use brass in our jewellery very often as it's prone to tarnishing, however some parts of our metal jewellery are made from brass or coated brass. Some crystal pendants are in a brass setting and may tarnish with prolonged contact with skin, oils and perfumes. Our Sterling Silver and 18k Gold hoops have a brass base so may become tarnished over time. We would not recommend buying these earrings if you are sensitive or allergic to brass, copper or zinc. If your ear piercing placement means that earrings sit against your neck, items with brass elements may tarnish quicker than usual.

Jesmonite Homewares (discontinued)

All of our jesmonite products are sealed with splash-proof sealant at a minimum. These products are resistant to light contact with water but should not be submerged as this may damage their integrity. Try not to leave these items in damp environments for too long.

Some items are sealed with a waterproof sealant, meaning they will repel water, making them safer for use in bathrooms. kitchens and for plants. Each item’s sealant status is declared in their listing descriptions. We cannot guarantee that these products are food-safe so should not be used to store or display food (at least not with direct contact).

Jesmonite is very durable and will last if cared for. Our products should survive minor drops and knocks, however thinner and more delicate pieces will be more likely to break so take extra care. Avoid contact with oils and clean with a damp cloth if needed.

You may be wondering, why is this all online now?

There's a few reasons we've gone paper-free with our care info:

  • Less paper waste! Physical inserts in parcels are helpful but if we need to update the care info, we’d need to get a whole new bunch of inserts printed and the old ones will go to waste. Plus, as we have products made of different materials we would need to have multiple different types of inserts, which would inevitably make more waste. We still provide cards with QR codes on the back of our thank you cards which will bring you straight here!

  • The care information will be as up to date as possible! If we come out with new products or learn anything new along the way we can make sure this page has all the most recent cautions and tips

  • This will be here for as long as we are! Picture this - you buy a pair of gold plated earrings from us and 2 months later, you drop them in the bath. You need to find out whether this will damage the earrings but you can’t find the insert from the package (because you probably threw it out after a few days - don’t worry, we all do it). No need to worry though, all of the info you need is all here! And if there’s anything you can’t find you can just drop us an email.

Our Eco Commitment

We try to be as eco-conscious with our practices as possible. Polymer clay contains plastic so we do everything we can to eliminate waste. Read more about what we do to help the environment below:

  • 48 Hour tracked shipping is used as standard. Not only is this method of shipping more eco friendly, packages sometimes arrive in the same time as 24 Hour/1st Class post anyway!

  • All clay scraps are stored and turned into something new and unique

  • Shavings and offcuts from drilling, sanding and assembling accessories are collected and stored for future use, rather than throwing in the bin

  • Our mailer boxes, tissue paper, tape, address labels, filler and cards are all recyclable and/or compostable! We also reuse packaging material we receive, such as bubble wrap, styrofoam and dissolvable packing peanuts

  • Package inserts can be recycled, but we designed them so they can be multi-purpose - jewellery cards can be kept to store your BTD pieces so they don’t get lost or tangled; thank you cards double as earring cards for free pairs

  • We store all care info on this website, rather than printing out extra inserts that will inevitably end up in the bin. Find out more about why we do this above.
